Ten years on, a plea to find baby boy's killer
DETECTIVES have renewed their appeal for information to find the killer of a newborn baby boy - exactly 10 years after his body was found at a funfair.
The baby was found in a black bin bag by a man walking his dog on an approach road to the Gulliver's World theme park at Callands in Warrington.
He had been strangled and hit around the head just a few hours after being born on March 14 1998, the day before Mother's Day.
After the grim discovery, a massive police hunt was launched with detectives determined to track down both the child's mother and the killer.
But despite help from the public and hopes for advances in forensic science, the investigation has drawn a blank.
The unidentified child was named Callum by police officers because it sounded like the Callands area where he was found.
The officer leading the case, Det Insp Jo Miller of Cheshire CID, said it would never be closed until police determined what happened.
She said the mother's DNA did not match anyone on the national database and the case remained a tragic mystery - she was unable to say whether the mother could have been responsible for his fatal injuries.
She said: "We will keep reviewing information and with advances in technology in future, we might be able to get a DNA match with the father. We can't say whether the mother may have killed the child - we need to speak to her to find out what happened."
Promising that police would deal with the mother sensitively, she added: "Whatever the outcome for the child, this was clearly a traumatic event for the mother.
"It may be that with the passage of time, there may be circumstances she now has the confidence to tell us about."
Baby Callum was finally laid to rest 136 days after his death at a funeral at St Elphins Parish Church in Warrington, paid for by public donations.
Following the funeral, £1,500 left in a charity fund was used to fund a baby garden at Walton Lea Crematorium in Warrington. Money was also given to Warrington Hospital's baby care unit.
